Joy Shaker Card | Tim Holtz Sizzix Christmas

Joy to the world and Happy Monday my crafty friends! Today I'm sharing this Joy Shaker Card I created for the recent Tim Holtz Sizzix Chapter 3 release. This shaker card features the Tim Holtz Sizzix Alphanumeric Shadow Upper Thinlits and the Tim Holtz Sizzix Stunning Snowflake Thinlits.

To get started, I cut a piece of cardstock to a square shape and die cut the center of it with the largest die from the Stunning Snowflake Thinlits. This left me with a large negative opening, perfect for a shaker card and I saved the actual die cut shapes for another project. I then added some machine stitching and inked the edges.


I then cut a piece of acetate just slightly smaller than the cardstock square and adhered it to the back side of the paper.


To create the shaker box I adhered strips of foam adhesive to the backside making sure there were no spaces or openings where the strips met. This ensures that the shaker filler won't be able to escape from the shaker box.


For the shaker filler, I used Distress Mica Flakes. These are perfect for adding a little shimmer and shine. Other options to use could be sequins, tiny jewels or seed beads.  To create the backside of the shaker, I stamped the word stamp from the Stripes and Holiday stamp set onto black cardstock with embossing ink and then heat embossed it with white embossing powder. I then adhered this to the shaker box filled with the mica flakes.


After completing the shaker box portion of the card, I layered it onto two pieces of patterned paper from the 2019 Christmas 8x8 Paper Stash.

To create the sentiment, I used the Alphanumeric Shadow Upper Thinlits and die cut each of the letters three times from the gold metallic paper in the Metallic Kraft Stock. I then adhered the letters using double sided foam adhesive to give it a little dimension. Using the Stripes and Holiday Stamp Set I stamped and fussy cut "joy to the world" and layered it onto of the die cut letters.

Pink & Main Ergonomic Blender Brush Review


Hello friends! Today I'm sharing something a little different...a product review! Pink & Main recently sent me their Ergonomic Blending Brush and their brand new Mini Ergonomic Blending Brush which was just released.

As a retired Physical Therapist, I've worked with many patients over the years who had a variety of impairments that limited their hand function, such as strokes and spinal cord injuries. So needless to say, I was immediately intrigued by the idea of an ergonomic crafting tool. What does ergonomic mean? The definition of ergonomic is as follows: relating to or designed for efficiency and comfort in the working environment. 

Pink & Main Ergonomic Blending Brush Review

Upon receiving the brushes (and a beautiful stencil to try them out with!) I sat down to test them out. At first glance, I was impressed with the pretty pink packaging. I also love that each brush has its own little case that you can sit on your desk.

When I first picked up the brushes I immediately loved all of the options you have for holding either brush size. If you happen to have difficulty with gripping small items the larger brush is 2 inches in diameter and I found it very comfortable to hold with a loose grip and still get wonderful ink blending. The mini brush has a 1 inch diameter and gives you the ability to do more detail blending while still being easy to hold in the hand.

Both brushes have super soft bristles. This helps the brush to glide easily over your stencil and paper with minimal pressure and effort. They are also super easy to clean. I used a slightly damp microfiber cloth to wipe them off and was able to easily move on to my next color.

They are a bit on the expensive side when you compare them to other ink blending brushes, however if you are in need of something that won't hurt your hand and will give you effortless ink blending, then this tool is the one for you. I could certainly see myself having one for each color family if I didn't want to have to clean them in between color changes. However, since they are easy to clean you could certainly make do with just one brush.

PROS:

Storage case for easy storage
Easy to clean
Effortless ink blending

CONS:
Just one - Price - However, with just about anything you get what you pay for. So personally, I think the price is worth it.

Merry & Bright Card | Tim Holtz Sizzix Christmas

The dies I used to create this Merry & Bright inlaid die card include the Holly Pieces Thinlits Dies and Merry and Bright Thinlits Dies.



Now let me walk you through how this inlaid design came together.  When I was originally creating this card, I seriously took the long and difficult road. I don't want you to have to struggle like I did, so I'll be sharing what I think might be a slightly easier option as well as how I actually created it. Either way you choose will end up with this final result and you may actually prefer one method over the other if you attempt something like this.

To get started, I cut a piece of Bristol Smooth Paper to 4.25 x 5.5 inches. I then placed the larger die from the Holly Pieces Thinlits into the right corner. I used Therm O Web Purple Tape to hold it in place and ran it through my die cutting machine. I then flipped the die around, placed it in the opposite corner, taped it in place and ran it through my die cutting machine a second time. As you can see, I placed it so there would be a small border around the outside edge of the cut areas. Feel free to die cut some sections using the tiny berries that are included as well.

This next step is where I would now change things quite a bit.  Begin with a 4.25 x 5.5 inch piece of Bristol Paper and ink blend it with your choice of red Distress Ink. Repeat this process with your choice of green Distress Inks. For my card I used Candied Apple, Fried Brick, Peeled Paint and Forest Moss. I then took each of these papers and die cut each of them with the Holly Pieces Thinlits, making sure to keep all the little pieces. You will also need 2 of each image to fill in all of the openings.

Next, take the original panel you die cut with the holly pieces in each corner and back it with a sheet of double sided adhesive cut to size. Then start popping in the pieces from the ink blended paper to fill in the die cut design. Once all of the pieces are in place, ink the edges with a bit of Vintage Photo and Walnut Stain Distress Ink. And there you have your inlaid design!

Originally, I cut the initial panel and kept all the pieces intact and adhered a double sided adhesive sheet to the back side of the panel. I then die cut an extra Holly Pieces from a scrap of cardstock and used it as a mask to ink the red and green areas. Because the areas are so close together, I had to tape off the areas to prevent the red and green ink from covering up each other too much. 

Either option takes a bit of time to complete, but now that you know the different ways to achieve this look, you are certainly free to take your pick! You may prefer one over the other!

To create the sentiment for the card, I die cut Merry from black cardstock several times using the Merry & Bright Thinlits Dies. I then adhered them together using a little Collage Medium. I then finished it off by stamping "merry & bright" from the Stripes & Holiday Stamp Set. This is a background stamp, so I stamped it onto black cardstock with embossing ink and heat set it with white embossing powder. I then trimmed off the words I wanted to use for this card and saved the others for future projects.

I then finished off the card by mounting it onto a piece of patterned paper from the Christmas 2019 Paper Stash and then again onto another piece of cardstock inked with Vintage Photo and Walnut Stain Distress Ink.

Better Days Ahead Card

Let me share a bit on how the card I created using these new dies came together. I began by die cutting each of the pieces from the Rainbow Die Set from watercolor paper. I then colored each piece using Distress Ink.

Here you can see how I smooshed the ink pad onto my craft mat, spritzed it with just a bit of water and then dipped the paper into the ink. I dried it with my heat tool and then repeated the dipping. The ink colors I used are Picked Raspberry, Spiced Marmalade, Mustard Seed, Mowed Lawn and Salty Ocean.


For the background, I die cut a bunch of extra clouds and used them as a mask to create a cloudy sky. I used non permanent adhesive to position them on a piece of Bristol paper. I then inked over them using Tumbled Glass Distress Ink.


I used double sided foam adhesive to adhere the rainbow and clouds. The little heart is from the Tim Holtz Falling Hearts Thinlits Die. I finished off the card by adding the sentiment from the Good Vibes Die Set.

Boo Shaker Card | Tim Holtz Sizzix Halloween

Boo! Hey friends! It may be the 4th of July here in the US, but I'm in a Halloween crafting mood myself! I'm back today to share a Halloween Boo Shaker Card I created using some of the new Tim Holtz Sizzix Chapter 3 Dies. You may have seen this project featured during Tim's Facebook Live. Now let's see how this shaker card came together! To get started, I took a piece of white Bristol paper (you can also use Mixed Media Heavystock) cut to 4 x 5.25" and die cut an opening in the center of it. I used one of the frames from the Curio Box Bigz Die, but any of the Stacked Thinlits would also work.


After creating the opening, I ink blended the paper using a combination of Wilted Violet and Seedless Preserves.


I then inked the edges with a bit of Black Soot Distress Oxide, gave the entire piece a spritzing of water with my Distress Sprayer and dabbed it dry.


After the inking was completed, I cut a piece of acetate and adhered it behind the opening. (I got the acetate from a Bigz Die packaging.) I then cut pieces of craft foam and adhered them around the opening. The adhesive of choice...Distress Collage Medium!


The background behind the shaker opening was created used the smoosh technique with a combination of Black Soot, Seedless Preserves and Fossilized Amber Distress Ink. I then adhered a spider web from the Spider Web Thinlits that I die cut from silver Metallic Kraftstock.

As for the shaker filler, I colored Distress Mica Flakes using Purple Twilight Alcohol Ink. I also die cut some spiders from the new Spider Web Thinlits, trimmed off the webbing, and added them to the mix as well. When creating shaker cards, I like to pour the filler onto the background to get a feel on whether I have enough filler or not. I then adhered the shaker box on top.


To decorate the front of the card, I die cut a couple of webs from black cardstock using the Spider Web Thinlits.

I then added the sentiment by die cutting silver Metallic Craftstock using the Alphanumeric Shadow Upper Thinlits. As you can see, I didn't use the shadow part of the die. I love the versatility of this die set...you can use it with or without the shadow to achieve a variety of looks! I also lightly sanded the letters to give them a slightly distressed look. To finish off the card, I layered the entire shaker onto a piece of black cardstock.

Halloween Haunted House Vignette | Tim Holtz Haunted Thinlits Die

Hello friends! I'm so excited to begin sharing some of the Sizzix Seasonal Chapter 3 projects I created for Tim Holtz.  I hope you'll join me in the coming weeks as I share the projects I created. Chapter 3 is full of all things Halloween and Christmas...and if you know me at all you know these are my favorite holidays. I love to decorate for both of them and of course craft all the things for them as well. Needless to say, I'm just a wee bit excited about this release!

Halloween Haunted House Vignette

This first project is a Halloween House Vignette featuring the Haunted Thinlits Die. From the moment I saw this die, I knew I wanted to combine it with the Tiny Lights to create an eerie glow coming from within.

To get started, I began by putting together the haunted house using the Haunted and Gatekeeper Thinlits Die. I painted pieces of watercolor paper with Distress Paint in Black Soot (for the house and bats), Hickory Smoke (for the house details) and Antique Linen (for the moon). I then die cut the respective pieces from each of the the painted papers and assembled the house.


To create the windows for the house, I actually used a piece of plastic. This is similar to the plastic envelope that the Sizzix Dies come in. I have a bunch of this from plastic dividers I've purchased from office supply stores and my 12x12 paper holders. For some reason, I never need all the dividers that come with these things so I have a pile of it! It made for a great window, as I wanted something that would allow the light to shine through without letting you see what was behind the windows. If you don't have any plastic like this, you could also use a piece of vellum to achieve the same look. I personally, liked how the plastic makes the house a little more sturdy.

The background inside the Vignette box was created using Distress Ink, heat embossing and a stencil.
I began with a piece of watercolor paper. I placed the Halftone Stencil onto the paper and inked over it with embossing ink. I then sprinkled it with clear embossing powder and heat set it with my heat gun. I then ink blended over it with Carved Pumpkin, Wilted Violet and Black Soot making sure to keep the Carved Pumpkin in the area that would go behind the house to assist with creating the eerie glow. Next, I splattered a bit of watered down Black Soot Distress Paint over the paper. I then trimmed the paper to size to fit the back of the box and adhered it with Collage Medium. I also trimmed extra pieces to cover the inside top and sides of the box as well.

Once the house was fully assembled I then played with twisting the Tiny Lights to fit behind it in the Vignette Box. I ended up trimming off a few of the lights to make the strand fit. To adhere the Haunted House inside the Vignette Box and to create space for the Tiny Lights, I glued several pieces of chipboard together and placed them behind a section of the house with no windows. I then glued this to the back of the Vignette Box.


Before we go any further, I did drill a hole in the back side of the Vignette Box. I feed the lights through the hold and then adhered the battery pack to the back side of the box. To help the box be less noticeable, I adhered a piece of black cardstock to the pack and trimmed it to size.

To decorate the outside of the Vignette Box, I painted it with Black Soot Distress Paint. While the paint was drying, I used the Spider Web Thinlits Die to cut a bunch of spider webs from black cardstock. I then adhered them to the outside of the box using Collage Medium. I trimmed some of them down to make them fit and of course I added a couple of the spiders here and there.


For a bit more grunge, I added Crackle Texture Paste to the front edges of the box. Once it was dry, I added some Black Soot Distress Crayon to dinge it up. For the final touch, I adhered some florist moss to the base of the box.


This is a look at the Halloween House Vignette with the lighted turned off. It still looks fun, but the Tiny Lights add a special touch to help complete the scene.
